1st Half :-

Having won the toss, Green Man elected to kick off in the start of this cup final. With nerves a plenty during the opening of the match, the ball was played back and forth for a few minutes. Athletico were awarded a free kick near to the centre circle which was lofted into the penalty area, but cleared for a corner. The subsequent corner was cleared by the Green Man defence. On 5 minutes, Green Man centre back Nick Matthews slid for a challenge against winger Callum Whitty of Priestwood and was left injured due to a high challenge on the players shin. Unfortunately for Nick this meant a quick end to his night and a trip to hospital to evaluate the injury.

Darren Kettle replaced the injured centre half and urged the side to cool down after the challenge bought a few altercations between the sides. Having been spurred on by the loss of a key player, Green Man pressed the Priestwood back line and after spurning a few opportunities James McClurg slotted a neat pass through to Danny Russell in the box, upon which he was fouled, leaving the referee with no option but to award the Green Man a penalty with 15 minutes played. Michael Brewster stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom right of the net, only for the ref to demand a re-take. Brewster didn’t fluster and placed the shot into the same corner ensuring his side took a 1-0 lead.

With 20 minutes gone the Green Man keeper Christopher Hurley mis kicked a clearance which landed at the feet of Priestwood striker Shane Levey 25 yards from goal, with his attempt failing to hit the target. Shortly after, a mistake by Darren Kettle of the Green Man lead to Callum Whitty being clear on goal, but 8 yards out he lifted the ball clear of the crossbar as the onrushing keeper approached. Green Man almost took a 2-0 lead as a scuffle in the box finally got cleared off the line by Priestwood keeper Daniel Ray. With 35 minutes gone, Daniel Wing finished a solo run with a superb left foot shot toward the top left corner of the Green Man goal, only for Chris Hurley to touch the ball around the post with the tips of his fingers.

Both sides now opening up several chances to score during the run in to the half time whistle. On 40 minutes, Priestwood were awarded a free kick 20 yards from goal nearing the corner of the box. Carl Withers stepped up and lofted the ball over the wall and into the bottom left corner of the Green Man goal to give Priestwood the equaliser at 1-1. Having been stunned by the free kick, Green Man had to soak up a bit of pressure and looked sure to concede another after Daniel Wing rounded the defence, only to see his shot strike the bar. This was the final effort of the half as the ref blew for the interval.

2nd Half :-

FWith 50 minutes played Priestwood were awarded a corner, which was played across the box. The ball was going to and fro until Matthew Davis got his head to the ball from 4 yards and struck the back of the net, giving Priestwood a 2-1 advantage. Priestwood kept up the pressure on the Green Man back line for around 10 minutes looking for a further goal, but challenges from James Rodgers and David Matthews kept the ball out of the area. Green Man striker Danny Russell was then challenged off the ball inside the Priestwood box, only for the ref to wave the play on. Shortly after, Michael Gooch of Priestwood had a one on one opportunity with the Green Man keeper only for a sliding challenge to see the danger pass. With 70 minutes gone, Daniel Wing slotted the ball through to Michael Gooch whom slotted the chance into the bottom left corner for a 3-1 lead.

From the resulting kick off, Green Man pressed up field and with the ball landing at the feet of Michael Brewster managed to pull a goal back after a superb lob from 18 yards over the on rushing Priestwood keeper. With the score at 3-2, Green Man started to throw their all at the Priestwood back line, leading to several corners, one of which was connected with by Danny Russell, only for Daniel Ray in the net to save the opportunity. With the additional pressure that Green Man was placing on Priestwood, gaps were left in the defence. Shane Levey and LeeTiedman having opportunities which were just wide of the mark. Matthew Davis wasn’t wide of the mark though as his 85th minute chip from 18 yards evaded the clutches of Chris Hurley and landed in the back of the net for a 4-2 Priestwood lead.

Obviously upset at this happening, Michael Brewster was sent from the pitch for a 2nd bookable offence having shown his displeasure a the goal being conceded. Green Man still fought on as James McClurg had a neat one two with Matthew Williams, but McClurg shot just wide of the mark. Shortly after, Referee Steve Sherry blew for full time leaving Athletico Priestwood worthy 4-2 winners of the Bracknell Town and District Sunday Football League’s Senior League Cup. The teams were presented the trophies by league patron John Wood (of John Wood sports).

A special mention must go to Dave White and the ground staff at Bracknell Town for preparing the pitch in preparation for the match after the torrential rain on the Thursday. Additional thanks go to both clubs whom provided assistance with getting the pitch ready on both Thursday night and Friday morning.

Bracknell Town & District Sunday Football League
Match Reports for League – 04/05/08

Premier Division

Fresh from a senior cup final on Friday night, Green Man Sunday and Athletico Priestwood were now doing battle to contest the Premier League title. All 3 points required by Green Man, whilst a point would be sufficient for Priestwood to gain the trophy. With the play being end to end it could have been anybody’s match throughout, but it was Priestwood whom shot the vital goal as Daniel Wing secured all 3 points and the trophy for the away side in this 1-0 win. This now sees Athletico Priestwood claim the League and Cup double for the 2007/08 season. Congratulations go to all the players for a well earned double win.

Wokingham United finish their season on a high by beating Finchampstead Athletic Sunday 3-1. Pat Selby (2) and Darren Thorne scoring for Wokingham, whilst Ian Rose got the goal for the visitors.

1st Division

Wokingham Wanderers condemned AFC Dukes to the foot of the table as the home side dominated in this match. Having scored 5 goals in the 1st half through Paul Martin (4) and Tom Soane, AFC Dukes could do little to prevent the events. Dukes did hit back early in the 2nd half, but Wanderers then went on to net a further 3 goals by Dave Griffiths, Simon Reip and Matt Pegg as the home side ran in comfortable 8-1 winners.

2nd Division

Bracknell Manics Res started this match against Woodley Hammers with a few injuries, and it rightly showed as Woodley dominated the 1st half hands down scoring 5 times without reply. After a stern talk at the break, Manics did stem the flow of the Woodley attack to 1 further goal but by then the damage had already been done. Giving Woodley a 6-0 win was Graham Dew (2), Kevin Finlay, Richard Wallis, Rob Timbers and an Own Goal from the Manics defence.

Queens Head had a closely contested match against BMW, but the home side didn’t capitalise on their chances as the away side did. Dave Pye netted for Queens Head, whilst Rory McGill (2), Lino Machado and Paul Sharman found the net for BMW. BMW were always a man down due to injury but seemed to have the edge on the game throughout as the 4-1 score line suggests.

3rd Division

Sandhurst Social took an early lead against Woodley Hammers Res when awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, Richard Evans struck into the top corner and with the help of the post found the net. Woodley replied twice through Charlie Gale and Miles Baxter to take a lead into half time. Sandhurst started bright in the second half but could not find a break through. Woodley scored again via Adam Richardson to open up a two goal lead. But Sandhurst fought back and got a goal when a scramble in the box led to the ball at Richard Evans feet and he smashed the ball across the goal for it to be deflected in off a Woodley defender with 7 minutes left. A freak third goal was scored when Graham Taylors tackle in the box went through the keepers leg with the game already into stoppage time. Sandhurst could have secured all 3 points when Adam Gillett went through but a good save prevented a 4th goal. Final score 3-3.

New Royal Saints have the summer to re-group after a crushing 9-0 defeat at the hands of GMAC. GMAC dominated the play from start to finish and Saints could not work any openings during the match. Steve Champion (5), Kelvin May (2), Jason Parsons and a Daniel Howard penalty was enough to see off the home side comfortably.

4th Division

Cable & Wireless stunned title contenders FC Fernhill as they shot down the high flyers whom had one eye on this Fridays Junior Cup Final. Steven Heard and Keith Halifax did the damage for Cable, whilst Sam Whiting’s 30 yard free kick sailed into the Cable net. Final score 2-1 to Cable & Wireless.
